HOW
PARENTS CAN ASSIST BEFORE THEIR CHILD ENTERS SCHOOL
By communicating a positive attitude about school, parents
can help their child greatly. Parents should talk about
school in enjoyable terms, emphasising the joy of learning
new skills and making friends.
- At all costs do not wait on your child but encourage
them to do as many things as possible for themselves.
An excellent example would be to involve them in household
chores, as these activities will develop their motor
skills, confidence, independence and social co-operation
within the family unit.
- Encourage a sense of order and routine in your child
and remember you are his role model. Control the programmes
and the hours spent in front of the television.
- Spend time with your child e.g. reading stories and
rhymes to them; communicate continuously to develop language
skills; demonstrate through words and actions that you
love your child; play with your child from hide-and-seek
to board games, especially child initiated activities.
Remember that your child needs BOTH quantity and quality
time from you, but they will also understand if you are
doing the best you can.
- Teach them a sense of responsibility by making them
look after their belongings.
- It is important for the learners’ peace of mind
that they are brought and collected from school on time.
Waiting for parents, or being late, will only make the
learner anxious.
- It is important for parents to have good communication
with the school from the start. Tell the educator if
your child has a medical condition or learning difficulty,
or if he or she is going through a major event like death
of a granny, moving house or the birth of a sibling.
This will help the educator in dealings with your child,
and help your child cope with school.
Please ensure that the school is kept up to date with
your address and telephone numbers, in case of emergency.
PARENT PARTICIPATION
- Parents need to support their children in all their
activities.
- Avoid spoiling them with too many rewards and gifts
but rather instill in them a sense of pride in being
self-motivated.
- Responsible parents encourage self-confidence and
independence in their children. Allow the child to set
their own goals and support them.
- Be prompt and punctual with all school requests and
returns.
- Help them to be ready for school by having them there
on time. If they are late, they arrive agitated and feel
humiliated.

SCHOOL PROCEDURE - FOUNDATION PHASE
/ INTERMEDIATE PHASE
School hours
- Grade 1 and 2 - 07:30 – 13:00
- Grade 3 - 07:30 – 13:35
- Grade 7 - 07:30 – 14:05
Punctuality
All learners are expected to be at school by 07:25. Learners
are expected to be punctual for all extra mural activities
and sport matches.
Absence form school
It would be appreciated if the school were informed telephonically
when a learner cannot attend school. In all cases, it is
necessary that a letter explaining the absence be given
to the class educator. A doctor’s certificate is
compulsory if the learner has missed three or more consecutive
days of school.
Homework
Homework is set Monday to Thursday for the foundation
phase only. The learners write down homework in the homework
diary. Parents are requested to check that the homework
is complete and to provide an environment conducive to
constructive work. Parents can use the homework diary as
a means of communication with the class educator. All notices
and newsletters to parents will be pasted in the Homework
diary in the foundation phase and the intermediate phase
use the planner.
Homework classes
These are provided in designated classes under educator
supervision, Grade 4 – 7, – please check the
extra mural list for further details.
Parent evenings
One formal parent’s evening is held every term.
Parents are encouraged to attend as it affords them the
opportunity to meet the educators and discuss the learners’ progress.
Individual appointments with educators can be made by phoning
the school secretary.
Language policy
St Conrad’s College is an English medium school,
therefore all learners are encouraged to communicate in
English. Language abuse in any form will not be tolerated.
Parental involvement
An excellent relationship exists between the school and
the parents of our learners.
Each parent should:
- take an active interest in their child’s
progress and discuss any concerns with the relevant
authority
- ensure that their child attends school and compulsory
school events
- attend, wherever possible any functions arranged
for parents (such as Parents Evenings and Open Forum)
- help uphold school regulations
- support special functions
- if time permits, assist educators as our “reading
mummies”
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION POLICY
Learners are encouraged to adhere to the religious and
educational philosophy of the school. Religious Education
is a subject within the school curriculum and all children
have to attend classes. The policy is available from the
school office.
Discipline
We adhere to the Code of Conduct but the onus is on the
parents to create, develop and maintain self-discipline
on their child.
School uniform shop
The school uniform shop that sells second-hand clothing
is situated up-stairs close to the Media Centre. It is
open during school hours and run by Mrs Gouveia.
All our foundation educators believe that our school
must be an extension of their homes. Our foremost aim is
to get to know and love your child.
